Menopause

Menopause is not a disease. It is a normal part of a woman's life cycle, and represents a transition from one stage of life to another. This transition involves both physical and emotional changes on a profound level. For many women, the transformation is relatively smooth with minor physical symptoms. For other women, however, the changes can create intense symptoms which are uncomfortable and may continue for many years.

Headaches, tiredness, lethargy, irritability, anxiety, nervousness, depression, insomnia, inability to concentrate, hot flashes, sweating and vaginal dryness are all symptoms which are associated with menopause. These symptoms are typically treated with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Unfortunately, HRT has been associated with significant health risks such as an increased likelihood of cancer.

Chinese medicine is ideal for treating menopausal syndrome because it restores physical and emotional balance. It focuses on both the symptoms and the underlying cause of the symptoms. Negative side effects from acupuncture and properly prescribed herbs are extremely rare. Positive side effects are welcomed and include mental and physical relaxation and alertness.

Herbal therapy is an important component of treatment for menopausal syndrome. Some interesting research in China has shown that herbs have a measurable impact on objective measures such as peripheral blood flow comparable to HRT in women who suffer hot flashes. Combined with acupuncture which has a strong psychological and emotional effect, Chinese medicine can effectively treat the whole range of Menopausal symptoms, without the fear of doing more harm than good.
